Empowering collaborative communities

The Weight of the World

apple in fast food containerThe battle of the bulge is not just a problem in the U.S., it is sweeping the globe.  Diabetes is a major killer in North America and the Caribbean affecting 10.2% of the population.  According to country rankings, Mexico is ranked 24, the U.S. 29, Belize 40, and Guatemala 68 for diabetes prevalence.  Obesity is overwhelmingly the cause of this diabetes epidemic.  Proper nutrition and regular exercise are unfortunately not synonymous with modern lifestyle.  The streets of Beijing, once filled with bicycles, now teem with cars.  The airport in Seoul’s busiest restaurant is Burger King.  That being the case, we must redesign our lifestyles to choose fruit as our fast food and walking as a form of transportation.  We must not let modern convenience rob us of our quality of life.  Oh, the irony.
